WHAT IS ROTARY? / TAKE ACTION

Rotary is a worldwide membership organisation of 1.2 million men and women in 200 countries who come together to serve their local and world community by:

  •   Promoting high standards of personal and business integrity,

  •   Building goodwill and peace through service to the world.

The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

Rotary represents a cross-section of the community's men and women. The organisation admitted women worldwide in 1989 and claims more than 150,000 women in its ranks today.

Since its beginnings in 1905 Rotary has provided the opportunity to meet weekly in an environment that is non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

Meetings offer a friendly fun atmosphere and personal development through experiencing a wide range of guest speakers.

Community service projects address many of today's most critical issues, such as; children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence.

Educational programs include, international exchanges for students and career development for teachers, and young professionals

Since 1985 Rotarians worldwide have united in a campaign for the global eradication of polio. This historic commitment to immunise all of the world's children against polio is a partnership with NGO's and governments thorough the PolioPlus program,

Rotary is the largest private-sector contributor to the global polio eradication campaign having donated $US 1.3 billion & 20 million volunteer hours.

The not-for-profit  Rotary Foundation, is supported solely by voluntary contributions and promotes the vision of a better world through international humanitarian grants service programs and the educational programs and cultural exchanges.

Foundation humanitarian and educational grants, now totalling more than US$80 million annually and exceed US$1.1 billion since 1947, are initiated and administered by Rotary members.

Rotarians became increasingly involved in promoting international understanding by serving in:

  •  The United Nations Charter Conference.

  •   Participating in UN conferences

  •   Promoting the United Nations in Rotary publications

  •   Rotary International's relationship with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dates back to a 1943

Rotary works to meet the changing needs of society, as it approached the dawn of the 21st century it expanded its service effort to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation and the individual economic needs of people in developing countries.
