SERVICE PROJECTS

Spinal Injuries Unit Project

The Rotary Club of Adelaide Parks  Club members undertook a Vocational visit to the Royal Adelaide Hospital Spinal Injuries Unit which serves SA & NT.  As a consequence of a talk from unit director Dr. Ruth Marshall about life for patients in a long term hospital situation the club decided to adopt the unit as a two year project.  The object of the project was to brighten the life & enhance the healing for patients.

The Club energised the support of Rotary Clubs from West Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory as well as individual & corporate donations to the value of $25,000 in cash & an estimated $5,000+ of hands on work.  The SIU was extremely thankful for the supply of 3 laptop computers, a DVD player, 45 new bed quilts & $20,000 (in two cheques) to purchase four State of the art Contra Electric Beds.  In addition members refurbished & repainted approximately 80 metres of Pergola & Courtyard seating.

Vin's Yard Project

The club that we assisted 90 year old neighbour Vin Murn to clean up his yard.  Until recently Vin was an avid gardener growing fruit trees, all his own vegetables and was able to maintain his yard and gardens, however in recent times Vin’s age had restricted his ability to work in his garden.  As a consequence the yard and trees became over grown.

The project took up four Sunday mornings in addition to weed spraying one week before the first work day.  In all three, 6x4 high sided trailer loads of green matter were removed and a 3.5 x 4.2m section of the back yard paved to allow access to the clothes line.

CITY to Bay Fun Run/Walk

The Adelaide Parks club participated in the City Bay Run/Walk under the team name "Finding a Cure" in order to raise funds for the Rotary Health Research Fund and the Neil Sachse Foundation.
10 members or friends participated entering through the "everyday hero" web site to get free entry, T shirt, fruit, drinks and moral support . The team raised over $1,000  for medical research split between the two chosen charities.
